TEAM RACE: St. Anthony’s Triathlon

Guest Post by RTA Club member, Larry C

Last week RTA had their first Team Race of the year in St. Petersburg, FL. About 12 club members made the trip to Florida to race the iconic St. Anthony’s Triathlon and kick off the 2017 season.

Because I always enjoy reading race reports from others, I decided to write my own.

This report is a summary from my own eyes.

I tried to keep it short.

Becoming a better swimmer is a process. It takes time and it usually doesn’t happen over night. However, there are definitely a few ways to speed up the process.

We regularly get the question, “What and how long will it take… for me to learn how to swim (or improve my current swimming ability)?”

To help answer this question, we thought it would be fun to highlight one particular athlete whom we have been working with most recently. We’ll discuss the stroke improvements made, speed gains earned and the time it took to accomplish this.

To The Soon To Be, IRONMAN

A letter to the triathlete about to step up to the IRONMAN starting line.

To the Soon To Be,

Months ago, you made a decision; you signed a piece of paper, and decided to commit yourself, to what I believe is the most grueling endurance race on the planet. You made the decision to challenge your body, and your mind, and see just what you are capable of. But that was then, and this is now.

There has been 1000’s of miles logged since that fateful day. Early mornings in the pool, late nights on the bike trainer, and runs during the hottest part of the day, and those are just the basic elements. There were the lifts, the yoga sessions, the doctors appointments, but even more important, there were the birthday parties, the weddings, the days and hours of work, and the events that could not be missed. It’s been a journey, and not an easy one.

In recent weeks, several RTA athletes performed their regular FTP (functional threshold power)  Bike Test and absolutely crushed it! Results below.

Why Test?

At Ridgewood Tri Athlete, our professional triathlon coaches understand the importance of regular testing in all three disciplines. Every 4-6 weeks we schedule our athletes to perform basic tests in each discipline. These tests act as a measuring stick and are used as a bench mark to elicit continual improvement and eventually to help set realistic targets for race day.

Not only do test results act as a form of extra motivation and encouragement for our athletes, but as coaches we use this data to prescribe specific workouts for the weeks to come. Each athlete has specific needs and react differently to different workouts.

Needless to say, it’s impossible for test results to ALWAYS come back favorable. However, when an athlete gets less then optimal results, it provides an additional opportunity for our coaches and athletes to roundtable and re-look at what they have and/or have not been doing. In most cases, we are able to make small changes to get their future test results on track and ultimately have them fully prepared on race day.

There have been countless first time finishers at various distances, TONS of new PR’s and several podium performances.

As professional triathlon coaches one of the most satisfying aspects of our job is helping our athletes and Team RTA club members achieve their goals and realize their dreams.

The TOUGHMAN Half distance triathlon which takes place at Croton Point Park located in the town of Croton-On-Hudson in NY is a perennial favorite among triathletes in the tri-state area and beyond.  Athletes from New York City, Fairfield, West Chester and Bergen County flock to this race every year.

If the race is NOT closed out already register ASAP! If it is sold out and you REALLY want to get in (and you should), shoot us a quick email and if we can’t get you in we can get you on the wait list!

The event is always well organized and well run. The volunteers are amazing and the course is scenic and challenging. Did I mention the bike course is completely closed to traffic?!?! For all of these reasons, Team RTA has slated TOUGHMAN New York as a Team Race for the last several years.

Because it’s a challenging course, it can be helpful to know what to expect on race day.
